A style is a language. A language can’t be owned — only the specific things said in it. This is the story of one style passed hand to hand until someone sued over it, and phronesis’ own line spoken in the same voice. Nothing protected is reproduced on this page — the originals are linked; what’s shown is ours.

The chain, in four moves

  1. Kruger. Since the 1980s, Barbara Kruger has made her work in one unmistakable voice: found images and blunt declaratives set in white Futura Bold Oblique on red — Your body is a battleground, I shop therefore I am. The look became hers.
  2. Supreme. In 1994 a skate label took that exact voice — white Futura Heavy Oblique in a red box — and made it a logo worth a fortune. It was never a secret where it came from.
  3. Married to the Mob. In 2013 the label Married to the Mob printed “Supreme Bitch” in the same red box. Supreme — the appropriator — sued for appropriation.
  4. Kruger shrugs. Asked about the suit, the artist whose voice all of them borrowed called it “a ridiculous clusterf**k of totally uncool jokers” — and joked she was waiting for every one of them to sue her for infringement. The originator, watching her own language get litigated over her head.

Why a style can’t be owned

Copyright protects works — a specific image, a specific phrase, a specific composition. It does not protect a look: bold white italics on red is a font, a colour, and an attitude, and none of those belong to anyone. That is exactly why the saga is a farce and exactly why the door is open. You may not copy Kruger’s pieces, or Supreme’s logo, or the “Supreme Bitch” mark. You may absolutely speak the language they all speak — in your own words.

So here is the next link in the chain, made honestly: the red, the white, the Futura oblique — and words that are only ours. Phronesis is Greek for practical wisdom, which makes the line land twice.

It is a credit and a commentary. It is not a copy: Kruger’s works, Supreme’s logo, and the “Supreme Bitch” mark are linked so you can go see the real things where they live — none of them are hosted here. The only artwork on this page phronesis made itself. That is the whole point of the chain: you honour a voice by adding to it, not by xeroxing it.
