Acedia as Motivational-Void Wrong Attractor: The Medieval Spiritual Listlessness, Amotivation Basin, and the Return to Engaged Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · motivational-void wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Acedia — the medieval monastic concept of spiritual-motivational collapse, the noonday demon of Evagrius Ponticus — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_AC in the landscape of engaged presence. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as engaged presence: the capacity to be genuinely invested in one's activities, relationships, and purposes; to find tasks worth doing and do them with care.

W_AC is the chronic state of motivational flatness, existential indifference, and inability to care about what one does or why. Acedia is rigorously distinguished from depression (which involves suffering; acedia is gray indifference), burnout (which follows exhaustion; acedia is pre-exhaustion motivational void), and laziness (which is preference for ease; acedia is absence of preference).

The paper draws on Evagrius Ponticus, John Cassian, Thomas Aquinas, and Byung-Chul Han to characterize the attractor through nine formal propositions covering: the motivational void phenomenology, temporal distortion, the three-way distinction, purpose-structure collapse as basin mechanism, digital distraction as basin deepener, social contagion of acedia, and return paths through action-first engagement, Benedictine ora et labora, logotherapy, and embodied presence practices.
