Achievement Anxiety as Success-Sabotage Wrong Attractor: The Approach-Avoidance Architecture, Threshold-Terror Basin, and the Return to Earned Arrival

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · success-sabotage wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Achievement anxiety — the paradoxical fear of the very achievement one consciously seeks, producing compulsive self-sabotage at threshold moments — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_AA in the landscape of earned arrival. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as earned arrival: the capacity to achieve, receive success, and inhabit one's accomplishments without catastrophic anxiety or compulsive self-undermining.

W_AA is rigorously distinguished from performance anxiety (anxiety before performance rather than at achievement), healthy ambivalence about success costs, and rational concern about success consequences. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: success-as-exposure (achievement makes one visible and evaluable; for those whose self-concept is organized around potential rather than actuality, actual achievement is more threatening than its absence; success transforms the subjunctive 'I could be' into the measurable, criticizable indicative 'I am this'), the deserving threshold (achievement anxiety is rooted in a felt discrepancy between actual accomplishments and the felt right to them; better to remain in approach indefinitely than to arrive and have success withdrawn), and identity reorganization dread (significant achievement requires the self to reorganize around a new identity; this reorganization is experienced as threatening — the loss of the familiar self-concept of the striving, not-yet-arrived person).

The Arrival Paradox is central: achievement anxiety reliably produces the failure it is organized to prevent — by sabotaging at the threshold, the individual forestalls both the feared exposure and the actual arrival, remaining in expensive perpetual approach without landing. Nine formal propositions characterize the earned arrival ground state, the success-sabotage wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the arrival paradox, developmental roots in punishment-following-success environments, and return paths through IFS work, graduated exposure, and self-compassion at achievement moments.
