Anosmia as Olfactory Ground State Disruption: Smell Loss as Embodied Displacement, Parosmia as Wrong Attractor, and the Neuroplastic Return of Olfactory Identity

We apply the Displacement Framework to anosmia, formalizing the olfactory ground state S°_olf as a seven-component vector: odor detection, hedonic valuation, retronasal flavor perception, autobiographical memory coupling (the Proust phenomenon), safety signaling, social-emotional bonding, and olfactory identity. Smell loss imposes multi-component displacement simultaneously — flavor becomes joyless (retronasal olfaction contributes ~80% of what is experienced as taste), autobiographical memories lose their olfactory trigger, gas and smoke cannot be detected, and social bonding through olfactory recognition is disrupted.

Nine formal propositions are derived covering: S°_olf as multi-component olfactory equilibrium, viral anosmia as externally imposed S°_olf disruption via sustentacular cell damage, flavor loss as the retronasal olfaction component, olfactory-memory coupling as autobiographical S°olf component, safety signaling loss as acute D(ξ_safety) from anosmia, parosmia as maladaptive neuroplastic wrong attractor (structurally more distressing than anosmia because every eating event becomes actively aversive), parosmia as higher D(ξ) for quality of life than absence of signal, the Hummel olfactory training protocol as guided neuroplastic return path, and the olfactory system's unique regenerative capacity as return path advantage over other sensory modalities.

The COVID-19 pandemic is analyzed as a mass anosmia event affecting tens of millions and as a natural experiment in the health and quality-of-life consequences of olfactory ground state disruption.
