Attachment Anxiety as Hyperactivated Attachment Wrong Attractor: Internal Working Model Architecture, the Anxious Paradox, and the Return to Earned Security

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Attachment anxiety (the anxious-preoccupied style in Bowlby/Ainsworth/Hazan & Shaver) is characterized by hyperactivation of the attachment behavioral system — escalating proximity-seeking, protest behaviors, and preoccupying relational anxiety. We apply the Displacement Framework to formalize attachment anxiety as a wrong attractor W_anxious in the relational landscape. The secure attachment ground state S0_secure is defined as confident exploration from a safe base, effective co-regulation with attachment figures, and asymptotic return to equilibrium after attachment threat.

W_anxious arises when the internal working model (IWM) encodes attachment figures as unreliable and the self as unworthy, generating hyperactivated proximity-seeking that paradoxically undermines the connection it seeks. Nine formal propositions cover: S0_secure as secure attachment with safe base and effective regulation (P1), W_anxious hyperactivated attachment architecture with IWM structure (P2), the hyperactivation mechanism — proximity-seeking escalation rather than deactivation under threat (P3), the anxious paradox — hypervigilant protest behaviors provoke the partner withdrawal they anticipate (P4), IWM as cognitive attractor framing all relational data through abandonment and unworthiness schemas (P5), early caregiving origins — inconsistent responsiveness as developmental basin construction (P6), cumulative Phi_anxious across relational, emotional, sexual, and somatic domains (P7), fearful-avoidant vs anxious-preoccupied topology — related wrong attractors with distinct basin structures (P8), and return paths including earned security, EFT, schema therapy, and mindfulness (P9).

Neurobiological substrate — amygdala hyperreactivity, cortisol reactivity, oxytocin dysregulation — is analyzed.
