We apply the Displacement Framework to occupational burnout, formalizing Maslach's three burnout dimensions as distinct displacement-framework components: exhaustion as depleted return capacity (recovery time exceeds recovery window, ρ → 0), cynicism/depersonalization as defensive gradient severing (α → 0; the worker reduces acute D(ξ) by withdrawing investment, but severs the engagement that IS the return path), and reduced efficacy as collapsed displacement gradient (∥∇D∥ → 0; no return path is perceived as available).
The burnout accumulation pathway is formalized as the transition from acute stress (correct displacement with self-organized return) through chronic stress (sustained displacement with impaired return) to burnout wrong attractor capture (W_burnout; return path severed). The job demands-resources (JD-R) model is formalized with demands as displacement generators and resources as return-path facilitators.
The cynicism paradox is proved: depersonalization is locally rational (reduces acute cost) but globally destructive (deepens W_burnout by eliminating meaning structures that generate return gradient). Compassion fatigue in healthcare is treated as secondary Φ accumulation through vicarious traumatization, with compassion satisfaction as its positive inverse. The recovery paradox is established: rest alone cannot exit W_burnout once established; active return-path engineering through gradient restoration and relational re-engagement is required.
