Chronic achievement-dependency is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CAD within the displacement framework: the pattern in which self-worth is contingent on current achievement status, which is never sufficient for more than brief relief. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated accomplishment: the capacity to pursue meaningful goals, experience genuine satisfaction at completion, and hold self-worth as unconditional — present between achievements as much as during them.
Three mechanisms sustain the achievement basin: the achievement-as-worth equation (the person's sense of value is experienced as directly contingent on achievement level; achievement feels necessary for psychological survival rather than intrinsically meaningful); hedonic adaptation acceleration (achievements bring only brief worth-elevation before the baseline reasserts; the next achievement must be larger to produce equivalent relief; this treadmill structure ensures the pattern cannot self-resolve through success); and rest-as-failure encoding (periods without achievement are experienced as laziness or moral failure; genuine rest is inaccessible because it registers as displacement from the achievement path).
The Achievement Paradox states: chronic achievement-dependency reliably undermines the quality of achievement it is organized to produce; the anxiety that drives constant striving impairs creative risk-taking, reduces depth of engagement, and ensures the person can never fully inhabit their accomplishments. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in conditional-love environments where worth was demonstrated through performance.
Return paths include unconditional self-regard practice, sabbath-equivalent rest, and IFS work on the achiever-manager and worth exile.
