Chronic approval-addiction is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CAA within the displacement framework: the pattern in which the person requires a continuous stream of positive social feedback — praise, recognition, validation — to maintain baseline psychological functioning; any reduction in approval supply produces dysregulation disproportionate to any actual loss; approval is not experienced as a relational pleasure but as a maintenance requirement.
The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated worth: the capacity to receive approval with genuine pleasure, hold it without requirement, and maintain stable self-regard through periods without positive feedback. Three mechanisms sustain the addiction basin: approval-as-maintenance requirement (approval has shifted from relational pleasure to psychological necessity; every social interaction becomes a potential supply event; relationships are unconsciously assessed primarily for their approval-supply value); approval-window narrowing (the types of approval that register as genuine become increasingly narrow over time; generic praise no longer satisfies; the person requires specific, detailed, unsolicited recognition from particular sources; this escalation ensures the supply is never adequate); and disapproval amplification (negative feedback is processed as catastrophically larger than positive feedback; a single critical comment can erase many positive ones; this asymmetric processing ensures chronic approval-hunger even in approval-rich environments).
The Approval Paradox states: chronic approval-addiction reliably reduces the genuine approval it is organized to obtain; approval-hungry behavior is visible and produces subtle withdrawal of genuine admiration; the authentic regard that would actually satisfy is most available to those who do not require it. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in environments where approval was scarce, conditional, or unpredictable.
Return paths include approval-fasting practice, internal-worth cultivation, and IFS work on the approval-seeker and worth exile.
