Chronic approval delay — the chronic pattern of being unable to feel satisfied, confident, or settled about one's work, decisions, or self until external approval arrives — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CAD in the landscape of intrinsic resolution. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as intrinsic resolution: the capacity to assess one's own work and decisions from an internalized standard, reach genuine felt satisfaction or dissatisfaction, and act on that assessment — remaining genuinely open to external feedback — without requiring external approval to resolve the internal uncertainty.
W_CAD is rigorously distinguished from appropriate responsiveness to genuine feedback, healthy openness to external perspective, legitimate use of others' expertise, and adaptive interpersonal validation-seeking in specific contexts. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: external-validation dependency (the approval-delayer cannot close the loop on their own work or decisions; the internal assessment system is structurally incomplete — there is always a final step that only external approval can provide; D(ξ) is generated by the gap between completion and approval), approval half-life (approval provides temporary resolution, but the satisfaction decays rapidly; as approval fades, uncertainty returns; the person is perpetually in the window between completion and validation), and accomplishment devaluation (work that receives no external response is experienced as worthless regardless of actual quality; internal quality assessment becomes impossible).
The Competence Paradox is central: chronic approval delay reliably produces the felt incompetence it is organized to resolve — by making competence-assessment structurally dependent on external validation, the approval-delayer becomes progressively less able to develop genuine self-assessment capacity. Nine formal propositions characterize the intrinsic resolution ground state, the external-validation-dependency wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the competence paradox, developmental roots in environments where work was only acknowledged when externally judged, and return paths through IFS work, internal standard cultivation, graduated toleration of unvalidated completion, and schema therapy.
