The capacity to hold and enact limits — to actually stop at a boundary rather than merely announce it — is a foundational component of psychological health and relational integrity. This paper formalizes the chronic failure of that capacity as a wrong attractor W_ CBP (chronic boundary-proclamation) within the displacement framework. The person living in W_ CBP does not lack limits: they have real, felt, often genuine limits.
What they lack is the capacity to enforce those limits through embodied action. Instead, the functional equivalent of limit-setting is replaced by announcement, declaration, and verbal articulation. The limit is named, repeatedly and often with considerable force, but never enacted. We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as embodied limits: the condition in which limits are held in the body and enacted in behavior, often without extensive verbal elaboration — the limit exists as an action, not a speech act.
Three interlocking mechanisms sustain the wrong attractor. Announcement-as-action substitution is the implicit architecture in which the cognitive and emotional experience of naming a limit provides sufficient satiation that enforcement feels unnecessary: the limit has, phenomenologically, already been set. Enforcement-as-conflict encoding is the structural equation of actual behavioral enforcement — leaving, not responding, declining to engage — with aggression, cruelty, or relationship threat, making the verbal announcement the only limit-setting move that feels safe.
Boundary-language-as-identity is the construction of a self-concept organized around being a person who has and articulates limits, which the chronic failure to enforce then threatens, triggering further proclamation as identity repair. Nine formal propositions develop the structure of the attractor, its basin-maintenance dynamics, and the conditions of return. The paper introduces and proves the Proclamation Paradox: chronic boundary-proclamation without enforcement systematically trains others to discount the announcements, increasing the rate of limit violations, which increases the frequency of proclamation, deepening the attractor and foreclosing the behavioral path.
The ground state S^0 — embodied limits — is characterized by the capacity to enact rather than narrate the limit, to stop rather than to describe stopping.
