Chronic catastrophizing is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CCZ within the displacement framework: the compulsive generation of vivid worst-case scenarios from ambiguous or mildly negative stimuli — a headache becomes a tumor, a delayed text becomes relationship rupture, a business setback becomes total ruin. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated probability assessment: the capacity to notice threats, assess their likelihood realistically, take proportionate action, and return to baseline engagement rather than dwelling in simulated catastrophe.

Three mechanisms sustain the catastrophizing basin: threat-probability distortion (the person's threat-detection system is chronically calibrated toward worst-case outcomes; low-probability bad outcomes are processed as if they were likely; this is experienced as realistic assessment rather than distortion); simulation-as-preparation belief (generating vivid worst-case simulations is experienced as prudent preparation; the simulation is felt as protective even as it generates the anxiety it is organized to prevent; and the preparation it supposedly enables is rarely undertaken); and catastrophe-arrest compulsion (when a catastrophic scenario is generated, the person cannot voluntarily exit the simulation; repeated attempts to stop thinking about it increase rather than decrease preoccupation through ironic process effects).

The Catastrophe Paradox states: chronic catastrophizing reliably produces the harm it is organized to prevent; the sustained activation from chronic worst-case simulation degrades the cognitive and physiological resources needed to actually respond to a real threat; the person who has been living in simulated catastrophe is least equipped to handle the actual difficulty when it arrives.

Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, distinguished from ordinary worry and appropriate risk assessment, with developmental roots in genuinely unpredictable or dangerous early environments. Return paths include probability calibration, simulation-interruption techniques, and IFS work on the catastrophizer and safety exile.
