Chronic Certainty-Projecting as Confidence-Performance Wrong Attractor: The Decisiveness-Display Architecture, Genuine-Inquiry Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Intellectual Humility

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic certainty-projecting is the compulsion to perform confident decisiveness even in domains of genuine uncertainty. We identify it as a wrong attractor W in the space of epistemic dispositions, pulling agents away from the ground state S^0 of calibrated intellectual humility. The Decisiveness-Display Architecture (DDA) is the cognitive-social mechanism by which projected certainty is generated as a status-maintenance and competence-signaling strategy.

The Genuine-Inquiry Foreclosure Basin (GIFB) is the downstream consequence: the systematic suppression of open, uncertain exploration that would be epistemically appropriate given the agent's actual state of knowledge. We present nine propositions tracing the causal chain from incompetence anxiety (P1) through false certainty as status marker (P2), the downstream harm to those who rely on projected certainty (P3), the expert-identity lock-in that makes recalibration costly (P4), the foreclosure of genuine inquiry (P5), the important distinction between useful confident communication and compulsive certainty-projection (P6), the necessary conditions for return (P7), the gradual recalibration pathway via epistemic-honesty practice (P8), and the stability of S^0 in the authority that comes specifically from saying “I don't know” when true (P9).

We argue that calibrated intellectual humility is not epistemic weakness but the ground on which genuine competence stands.
