Chronic Compliment-Deflection as Positive-Regard Wrong Attractor: The Acceptance-as-Arrogance Architecture, Positive-Regard Dissonance Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Reception

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · positive-regard wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic compliment-deflection is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CCD within the displacement framework: the compulsive deflection, minimization, redirection, or disputation of positive feedback — the inability to receive genuine appreciation, recognition, or admiration without immediately neutralizing it. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated reception: the capacity to receive positive regard, let it land, feel it, and acknowledge it graciously without either dismissing it or becoming dependent on it.

Three mechanisms sustain the deflection basin: acceptance-as-arrogance belief (receiving positive feedback is experienced as arrogant or presumptuous; agreeing with a compliment feels like claiming superiority; deflection is experienced as genuinely virtuous but prevents metabolization of positive regard); positive-regard dissonance (the compliment conflicts with the person's internal working model of self; deflection is less cognitively demanding than updating a self-concept organized around deficit; dissonance is resolved by discounting the evidence rather than updating the model); and deflection-as-connection script (self-deprecating deflection is a learned social script that may have been reinforced in contexts where receiving compliments caused friction; the person experiences deflection as social smoothness even as it prevents genuine relational depth).

The Reception Paradox states: chronic compliment-deflection reliably impoverishes the relational fabric it is organized to protect; the person who deflects every positive expression teaches others that positive expression is unwelcome and eventually receives less of it; the deflection that feels humble progressively isolates the person from the warmth and regard they need. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in environments where self-promotion was punished or modesty required.

Return paths include reception practice, self-concept updating, and IFS work on the deflector and worth exile.
