Chronic defensiveness — the stable interpersonal pattern of interpreting neutral or mildly critical feedback as personal attack, responding with justification, counter-attack, or victim stance as the dominant relational style — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CD in the landscape of open receiving. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as open receiving: the capacity to take in feedback — including critical, uncomfortable, or inaccurate feedback — without flooding, without counter-attack, and with genuine curiosity about what might be useful.
W_CD is rigorously distinguished from appropriate self-defense, legitimate pushback against unfair criticism, and assertiveness. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: the shame-threat activation (criticism is experienced as shame induction — evidence of fundamental defectiveness — making the defensive response a rational reaction to existential threat), the justification reflex (automatic response is explanation and counter-argument rather than reception, addressing whether the criticism is fair rather than what is useful in it), and the counter-attack/victim bifurcation (defensive response takes two forms — turning the tables and victim stance — both foreclosing genuine reception).
The feedback-deprivation paradox is central: chronic defensiveness reliably eliminates honest feedback, producing a sealed information environment in which the defensive person is progressively disconnected from accurate self-data. Nine formal propositions characterize the criticism-as-attack basin, shame-threat activation, justification reflex, counter-attack/victim bifurcation, feedback-deprivation paradox, developmental roots, Gottman's relational consequences, return paths, and distinction from appropriate self-defense.
