Chronic Deferral as Open-Option Compulsion Wrong Attractor: The Foreclosure Terror Basin, Ideal-Option Fantasy, and the Return to Calibrated Commitment

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic deferral is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CD within the displacement framework: the systematic postponement of decisions and commitments, distinct from procrastination (which avoids starting tasks) — this pattern is specifically about the avoidance of choice itself; organized around the belief that commitment is loss. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated commitment — the capacity to make decisions proportionate to their actual reversibility; to close options when closing them is appropriate; to commit to a direction without experiencing this as the permanent foreclosure of all alternatives.

Three mechanisms sustain the deferral basin: option-closure terror (the belief that every closed option is permanently lost; the asymmetry is key — the pain of closing an option is experienced as large and certain, while the benefit of commitment is experienced as uncertain); ideal-option fantasy (the belief that unchosen options might have been the best option; this fantasy maintains potency precisely because unchosen options are never tested against reality; the deferred alternative remains ideal because its problems are never encountered); and commitment-as-submission (making a commitment is experienced as submitting to a demand; deferral is a refusal to be bound; this gives deferral an autonomy-preservation character organized around reactive resistance rather than genuine freedom).

The central Freedom Paradox states: chronic deferral reliably produces the unfreedom it is organized to prevent; the person who keeps all options open to preserve maximum freedom finds that unkept options expire, unexercised capabilities atrophy, and the life being kept available while commitments were avoided gradually becomes unavailable through the passage of time. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor structure, with developmental roots in environments where commitments were punished or preferences were systematically overridden.

Return paths include graduated commitment practice, distinguishing reversible from irreversible decisions, IFS work on the option-keeper part, and values clarification.
