PhronesisChronic distancing is analyzed within the displacement framework as a persistent wrong attractor W_CD in which emotional and physical withdrawal from intimacy is stabilized by a cycle of approach, terror, retreat, and apparent safety that incrementally forecloses genuine relational contact. We define the ground state S^0 as calibrated vulnerable proximity: the capacity to sustain closeness with proportionate permeability, receiving care without dissolution and offering presence without compulsive self-protection.
Three interlocking withdrawal mechanisms are identified: (1) the intimacy-threat appraisal, in which genuine contact is unconsciously registered as existential danger, activating avoidant response regardless of the partner's actual safety; (2) the avoidant strategy repertoire, comprising behavioral, cognitive, and somatic techniques for maintaining distance while preserving the social surface of connection; and (3) contact-skill atrophy, the progressive erosion of the neurocognitive and interpersonal capacities required for genuine intimacy as a consequence of chronic non-use.
We further describe the genuine-contact foreclosure basin as a self-deepening geometry in which each cycle of withdrawal makes the next approach more frightening, steepening the basin walls over time. Nine formal propositions organize the analysis from the mathematics of the wrong attractor through mechanistic description to return-path specification. Return to S^0 is possible via graduated exposure to genuine contact in conditions of adequate safety, and requires the revision of the intimacy-terror association at experiential rather than merely cognitive levels.
