Chronic Distraction-Seeking as Internal-Silence Aversion Wrong Attractor: The Avoidance-of-Interiority Architecture, Stimulus-Dependency Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Interiority

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

The capacity to remain with one's own internal experience — to tolerate silence, boredom, discomfort, longing, and the ordinary flux of aliveness without immediately reaching for external input to manage it — is a fundamental competency of psychological health. This paper formalizes the chronic failure of that capacity as a wrong attractor W_ CDS within the displacement framework: chronic distraction-seeking as internal-state avoidance.

The person living in W_ CDS compulsively reaches for external cognitive input — screens, podcasts, background noise, social media, content streams — not to accomplish anything or to rest or to recreate, but to maintain a state in which internal experience is obscured. This is categorically distinct from recreational media use, healthy stimulation, and even clinical boredom; it is specifically the deployment of external input as a defense against interiority.

We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated interiority: the capacity to tolerate internal silence and the states that arise in it — discomfort, boredom, grief, longing, restlessness, aliveness — without requiring external noise to make those states manageable. Three interlocking mechanisms sustain W_ CDS: (1) internal-silence-as-danger encoding, the implicit belief that what arises in internal silence is intolerable, threatening, or overwhelming; (2) stimulation-as-presence substitution, in which the person experiences being alive and engaged only when receiving external input, internal states not registering as real experience; and (3) content-hunger compulsion, the automatic reaching for a screen, podcast, background noise, or social input whenever a gap in external stimulation appears, experienced as relief rather than loss.

Nine formal propositions articulate the structure of the attractor and its basin-maintenance dynamics. The paper introduces and proves the Distraction Paradox: chronic distraction-seeking that manages internal discomfort systematically prevents the processing and integration of the avoided states, which accumulate displaced cost and require increasingly intense distraction to suppress, deepening the attractor basin.

Developmental roots, neurological substrate, and return paths — including structured silence exposure, somatic interoceptive training, and Internal Family Systems work on the avoidance protector and the buried exile — are examined in detail.
