Chronic emotional flooding is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CEF within the displacement framework: the experience of all emotions at or near maximum intensity, with no middle register; minor frustrations flood into rage, mild disappointments into despair, small excitements into euphoria; the affective modulation system that allows proportionate response is chronically unavailable.
The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated affect: the capacity to experience the full range of emotions with intensities proportionate to triggering events, to move through emotional states, and to return to baseline. Three mechanisms sustain the flooding basin: affect-amplitude locking (the person's nervous system defaults to maximum-intensity expression of whatever emotion is triggered; this is not conscious performance but a neurophysiological set-point problem; the window of tolerance is narrow and easily exceeded by minor stimuli); intensity-as-authenticity equation (full emotional expression is equated with emotional honesty and depth; modulation is experienced as suppression or emotional deadening; this framing makes intensity feel not just unavoidable but morally correct; attempts to modulate are experienced as betrayal of genuine feeling); and flooding-as-communication (extreme emotional expression is a learned communication strategy; in environments where moderate expression was ignored, flooding reliably produced response; the intensity is instrumentally reinforced and generalized to contexts where it is not necessary).
The Flooding Paradox states: chronic emotional flooding reliably impoverishes the emotional life it is organized to express; extreme constant intensity produces habituation, numbness, and others' withdrawal from the emotional field; the person who expresses everything maximally is less felt and less responded to than the person who expresses proportionately. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in chaotic or emotionally extreme households and early trauma that narrowed the window of tolerance.
Return paths include window-of-tolerance expansion, affect modulation practice, and IFS work on the flooding part and the original communication exile.
