Chronic Emotional Uneventfulness as Affective-Flatness Wrong Attractor: The Intensity-as-Threat Architecture, Evenness-Identity Basin, and the Stability Paradox

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic emotional uneventfulness — the active, self-maintaining pattern of keeping one's emotional life deliberately flat, undramatic, and uneventful, producing a protected but impoverished affective life — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CEU in the landscape of affective aliveness. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as affective aliveness: the capacity to move through the natural range of human emotional experience — including intensity, disruption, surprise, joy, grief, and passion — without chronic management that dampens the emotional landscape into perpetual evenness.

W_CEU is rigorously distinguished from pathological anhedonia, trauma-based emotional numbing, appropriate equanimity, healthy emotional regulation, and genuine temperamental stability. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: intensity-as-threat architecture (emotional intensity in any direction has been learned as dangerous or destabilizing; D(ξ) is generated by emotional arousal above a low threshold; the management system activates to dampen any state exceeding the flatness zone), evenness as virtue (the identity is organized around being stable and unrattled — emotions are threats to this identity; the flat person experiences others' intensity as immature), and aliveness atrophy (each act of emotional dampening weakens the affective system; over time, states requiring emotional aliveness — genuine passion, deep grief, creative transport — become inaccessible because the management system has prevented their development).

The Stability Paradox is central: chronic emotional uneventfulness reliably produces the instability it is organized to prevent — the affective deadening generates growing meaninglessness, depression of vitality, and existential crisis that the flatness management cannot address, because the management system was organized to prevent feeling and the crisis is about not feeling. Nine formal propositions characterize the affective aliveness ground state, the affective-flatness wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the stability paradox, developmental roots in chaotic or overwhelming households, and return paths through somatic approaches, IFS work, graduated exposure to emotional intensity, and creative engagement.
