The agent captured in W_CEC does not primarily act from envy toward harm; rather, she cannot acknowledge her envious feelings even privately, because the moral belief that envy reveals fundamental character deficiency makes the feeling intolerable as evidence about the self.
The adaptive ground state S0 is calibrated envy awareness: the capacity to notice envious feelings, acknowledge them without shame, use them informationally (what do I genuinely want?), and allow them to metabolize without either destructive action or suppressive denial. Three mechanisms generate and maintain W_CEC: the envy-as-smallness belief (which converts envious affect into identity-level evidence of moral deficiency; to feel envy is not merely to have a negative emotion but to be revealed as a small, ungrateful, petty person); the reframing compulsion (which automatically transforms unacceptable envy into acceptable substitutes — inspiration, happiness-for-them, disinterest — while the original envy continues to organize behavior invisibly; the reframe is genuine in the sense that the person believes it, but it does not process the underlying envy); and unprocessed envy accumulation (by which denied envy resurfaces as chronic resentment, avoidance of the envied person, devaluation of their achievements, and structural background dissatisfaction with one's own life).
