We analyze chronic fantasizing about leaving—the habitual rehearsal of departure from relationships, jobs, cities, and commitments—as a wrong attractor W_ CFL in the landscape of present engagement. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated honest evaluation: the capacity to assess one's actual circumstances clearly, to remain present to the costs and gifts of what is, and to reach genuine decisions—either full commitment or deliberate exit—without sustained refuge in imagined elsewhere.
Three reinforcing mechanisms constitute the exit-rehearsal architecture: (1) the fantasy relief cycle, wherein present discomfort triggers exit imagination that generates temporary relief, thereby reinforcing avoidance of engagement and deepening the original discomfort; (2) idealization of elsewhere, wherein the imagined departure destination is constructed without the friction, costs, and disappointments that any real alternative would contain; and (3) present-devaluation accumulation, wherein repeated mental exit degrades the agent's felt connection to their actual circumstances, making those circumstances progressively harder to inhabit.
We formalize the displacement measure D() and the accumulated displacement field = D()\,dt, and establish nine propositions culminating in the Elsewhere Paradox (P7): chronic fantasizing about leaving makes leaving impossible by substituting for the honest evaluation that genuine departure requires. Return paths through present-engagement practices, honest appraisal, and the binary commitment discipline are examined.
The paper closes with analysis of grass-is-greener syndrome, commitment phobia, nostalgia for the future, and the structure of ambivalence traps.
