PhronesisWe formalize chronic future-self comparison (CFSC) as a wrong attractor W_CFSC within the displacement framework. The CFSC attractor is characterized by three interlocking sustaining mechanisms: future-self idealization, in which a fully-resolved fictional self is constructed as the evaluative standard; present-self disparagement, in which the comparison reliably produces global negative self-assessment; and becoming-as-primary-orientation, in which the subject's fundamental relationship to their own existence is one of transit rather than habitation.
We identify the central paradox of the configuration—the Becoming Trap—in which chronic future-self comparison structurally prevents the development it is organized to motivate, because genuine development requires the engaged acceptance of the present self that the attractor actively suppresses. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor geometry, the sustaining mechanisms, and the paradox structure.
We distinguish W_CFSC from healthy aspiration and genuine growth orientation, trace developmental roots in environments that treated the child as a future project rather than a present person, and describe return paths to the healthy ground state S^0: calibrated temporal self-regard, characterized by the capacity to hold genuine aspirations and work toward them while inhabiting the present self with appropriate acceptance.
