In its acute, calibrated form, social vigilance is indispensable to navigating a world in which real threats sometimes appear.
Chronic hypervigilance about others is here formally reconceptualised within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W in the landscape of social-emotional functioning, structurally distinct from the healthy ground state S^0_alert—calibrated alert openness—to which the system would naturally return in the absence of sustained displacement. The wrong attractor is characterised by three interlocking mechanisms: the social-danger architecture (a perceptual schema that pre-classifies ambiguous social signals as threatening), the anticipatory hyperarousal loop (which keeps the autonomic system at elevated readiness in the absence of acute threat), and the relaxed-presence foreclosure basin (in which genuine interpersonal openness is systematically prevented, removing the corrective social experiences that would otherwise allow recalibration).
Nine propositions formalise the scan-detect-confirm feedback cycle, the hypervigilance paradox (safety behaviours prevent disconfirmation), documented physiological and relational costs, the foreclosure of intimacy, and the logic of the return path through graduated exposure, mentalising, and somatic reconditioning.
