PhronesisChronic idea-hoarding—the systematic accumulation of unreleased creative potential without the corresponding act of completion and release—constitutes a specific dynamical failure mode in creative systems. We formalize this pattern as a wrong attractor W in the state space of creative practice, distinct from productive generativity, productive fallow periods, or the ordinary friction of making.
The wrong attractor W is self-reinforcing: each unfinished project generates apparent reasons to defer completion of all subsequent projects, constructing what we term the Unreleased-Potential Architecture (UPA). This architecture progressively forecloses access to the ground-state basin S^0 of calibrated creative output—the region of phase space in which ideas are generated, developed, completed, and released in rough proportion.
We present nine propositions (P1–P9) characterizing the structure of W, the topology of the UPA, the mechanism of completed-work foreclosure, and the conditions under which return to S^0 becomes possible. The analysis draws on dynamical-systems vocabulary, phenomenological observation of creative practice, and the broader Phronesis framework for understanding attractor-mediated failure in human systems.
Key findings: the UPA has a deceptive energy profile (low apparent cost, high latent cost); completion-resistance is stabilized by identity-fusion between the creator and the unreleased work; and the return path to S^0 requires asymmetric intervention targeting the completion act rather than idea generation.
