Chronic identity shapeshifting — the pervasive pattern of completely reorganizing one's personality, values, interests, preferences, and manner of being to match whoever one is with, leaving no stable authentic self that can be known, loved, or inhabited — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CIS in the landscape of stable self with genuine flexibility. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as stable self with genuine flexibility: a stable core of values, preferences, and ways of being that genuinely adapts its expression to context without abandoning itself — the capacity to be different with different people while remaining recognizably oneself.
W_CIS is rigorously distinguished from appropriate social adaptability, genuine personality development through relationship, cultural code-switching, and healthy context-sensitivity. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: self-as-mirror (the chronic shapeshifter has organized their identity around reflecting others back — becoming what others seem to want; D(ξ) is generated by maintaining a consistent self in the presence of others' preferences), approval through resonance (the shapeshifter's primary strategy is producing resonance — becoming so like the other that connection feels inevitable, but the connection is with the mirror, not the person), and authentic self foreclosure (each act of shapeshifting progressively suppresses and destabilizes the authentic self; over time the genuine preferences, values, and ways of being become inaccessible, not destroyed but never exercised).
The Connection Paradox is central: chronic identity shapeshifting reliably produces the rejection and aloneness it is organized to prevent — by eliminating the distinctive self that could be genuinely known and loved, the shapeshifter ensures that all apparent acceptance is acceptance of a performance. Nine formal propositions characterize the stable self ground state, the chameleon wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the connection paradox, developmental roots in environments where authentic self was repeatedly rejected, and return paths through identity exploration, IFS authentic self work, ACT values clarification, and safe relationships where authentic expression is explicitly welcomed.
