Chronic Inauthenticity Vigilance as Trust-Foreclosure Wrong Attractor: The Universal-Performance-Presumption Architecture, Confirmation-Detection Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Trust

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic inauthenticity vigilance — the compulsive scanning of others for signs of inauthenticity, performance, and hidden agendas, producing inability to trust anyone as genuinely who they appear to be and progressive relational isolation — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CIV in the landscape of calibrated trust. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated trust: the capacity to extend appropriate trust to others' self-presentation — remaining genuinely attentive to inconsistencies and red flags — without organizing one's perceptual field around the premise that everyone is performing rather than being.

W_CIV is rigorously distinguished from healthy discernment, appropriate skepticism with genuinely deceptive people, trauma-informed caution in high-risk environments, and accurate detection of actual manipulation. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: universal performance presumption (the inauthenticity-vigilant person operates from the premise that all social presentation is performance; any warmth or kindness is read as strategic; D(ξ) is generated by apparent genuineness, which must be decoded as concealed motive), confirmation architecture (the vigilance system is confirmation-biased — any ambiguous behavior confirms inauthenticity, and any consistent genuineness is reinterpreted as sophisticated performance; the detector is unfalsifiable), and self-inauthenticity induction (chronic vigilance makes the vigilant person perform their own authenticity — overcorrecting into demonstrative genuineness to distinguish themselves from the performers they see everywhere).

The Authenticity Paradox is central: chronic inauthenticity vigilance reliably produces the relational inauthenticity it is organized to detect — by treating everyone as performing, the vigilant person creates relational environments where genuine connection is impossible. Nine formal propositions characterize the calibrated trust ground state, the trust-foreclosure wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the authenticity paradox, developmental roots in genuinely deceptive caregiving environments, and return paths through earned trust graduated exposure, IFS work on the detecting part, discernment calibration, and mentalizing-based treatment.
