We apply the Displacement Framework to chronic loneliness, formalizing it as a social disconnection wrong attractor maintained by the hypervigilance-withdrawal loop. The critical formal distinction is established at the outset: D(ξ_loneliness) is a function of perceived rather than objective social connection — a person can be surrounded by others and profoundly lonely, or objectively isolated and not lonely.
The social connection ground state S°_social is defined phenomenologically around felt understanding, belonging, and mattering, explicitly decoupled from network size. Situational loneliness is formalized as a healthy return signal — analogous to hunger. Chronic loneliness (W_lonely) emerges when the signal becomes a wrong attractor through the self-sealing hypervigilance-withdrawal loop: perceived isolation → social threat hypervigilance (heightened detection of negative cues, ambiguous cues interpreted as rejection) → defensive withdrawal → reduced positive social experience → continued perceived isolation.
The neurobiological substrate involves ACC/insula social pain circuitry (Eisenberger), cortisol/HPA dysregulation, elevated IL-6 and TNF-α, sleep architecture disruption, and attentional threat-detection bias. The perception-reality gap — four systematic cognitive biases that maintain divergence between perceived and actual social regard — is formalized as the defining wrong-attractor feature.
