Chronic Martyrdom as Resentment-Accumulation Wrong Attractor: The Sacrifice-as-Currency Loop, the Failure of Indirect Communication, and the Return to Calibrated Contribution

Chronic martyrdom is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CM within the displacement framework: the chronic pattern of self-sacrifice organized around the expectation of recognition that never comes. The person in W_CM consistently gives more than their share, endures more than their share, and forgoes their own needs — not from genuine generosity but from an implicit contract in which sacrifice is the currency and recognition is the expected return.

The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated contribution — the capacity to give, help, and sacrifice genuinely when genuinely called for; to receive care in return without guilt; to negotiate about contribution levels when imbalanced; to express needs directly rather than through demonstrated suffering. Three mechanisms sustain the martyrdom basin: the sacrifice-as-currency belief (self-sacrifice generates an implicit debt in others; the martyr gives transactionally with an implicit expectation of recognition that is never stated because stating it would make the exchange explicit and undermine the identity of selfless giver; the implicit nature of the contract makes it unenforceable, which is why it is systematically violated); suffering-as-communication (when the implicit contract is violated, the martyr communicates grievance through increasingly visible suffering — sighing, exhaustion, comments emphasizing the burden; this indirect communication fails because it does not say what it means); and renegotiation refusal (direct renegotiation is refused because it would reveal the transactional nature of the sacrifice and undermine the selfless-giver identity).

The central Sacrifice Paradox states: chronic martyrdom reliably produces the ingratitude it is organized to prevent; others receive the sacrifice as a burden, sense the manipulation in the indirect communication, and respond with withdrawal of recognition rather than its extension.
