PhronesisChronic micromanaging is formally reconceptualised within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_ MM in the landscape of delegative leadership functioning, distinguished from the ground state S^0 — calibrated confident oversight — by the substitution of process surveillance for outcome trust. The chronic micromanager cannot delegate without continuous checking, cannot observe a minor deviation without correcting it, and cannot tolerate the uncertainty that genuine task transfer requires.
Paradoxically, this oversight architecture produces precisely the degraded competence it fears: by monitoring so closely that others cease to exercise autonomous judgment, the micromanager forecloses the very trusted delegation that would free both parties. This paper formalises the oversight architecture as a five-stage relief cycle — task delegated, outcome-uncertainty anxiety, surveillance initiated, deviation detected, correction imposed, temporary relief, others' capability eroded — and demonstrates that each passage through the cycle deepens the basin.
A displacement cost function D() and accumulated cost = D()\,dt are introduced. Nine propositions formalise the dynamics of attractor capture, oversight escalation, foreclosure of trusted delegation, the monitoring relief cycle, identity consolidation around quality surveillance, competence suppression in others, resentment generation, basin deepening, and the return condition. The trusted-delegation foreclosure basin is characterised geometrically: its depth increases as others' capacity declines and as the manager's identity fuses with the role of the one who ensures quality.
The return to calibrated confident oversight requires clarifying outcomes versus processes, graduated delegation, tolerance of imperfect execution, and recognition of the surveillance cost. The paper draws on Chambers's account of micromanagement, Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory, the learned helplessness literature, and Barlow's treatment of anxiety and control.
