Chronic need-concealment — the chronic pattern of systematically hiding one's needs, wants, distress, and dependency from others and often from oneself, organized around shame about having needs or the belief that needs will not be met — is here reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_CNC in the displacement framework. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated need expression: the capacity to know one's own needs, assess whether and to whom they can be expressed, and allow genuine need-expression in appropriate relationships.
Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: need-as-weakness belief (the concealer operates from the premise that having needs reveals fundamental inadequacy; need is experienced as the opposite of strength; needs are reframed as preferences or failures to be overcome rather than legitimate states to be acknowledged); preemptive self-provision (to prevent the experience of needing and not receiving, the person meets their own needs before acknowledging them or converts legitimate needs into independence demonstrations; the loneliness of self-provision is preferred to the vulnerability of expression); and invisible need loop (concealed needs do not disappear but resurface as indirect expressions — irritability when unsupported, withdrawal when uncared-for, resentment when unacknowledged — without direct expression that would allow repair, creating relational confusion and the experience of being fundamentally unseen).
The central Connection Paradox states: chronic need concealment reliably produces the isolation it is organized to prevent; by presenting as need-free, the concealer prevents the genuine reciprocal care that would create the connection they most need. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, developmental roots in environments where need expression was met with unavailability or shame, and return paths through somatic awareness, IFS work, graduated need-expression practice, and attachment-based therapy.
