We analyze chronic news-monitoring — the compulsive, throughout-the-day checking of news media as a threat-vigilance behavior — as a wrong attractor W_ CNM in the landscape of calibrated world engagement. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated world engagement: the capacity to stay informed about genuine collective developments proportionally, gathering information adequate for understanding and meaningful response, then disengaging without compulsive rechecking that amplifies anxiety without improving either knowledge or preparedness.
We identify three sustaining mechanisms that generate and maintain the wrong attractor: (1) information-as-control, the operative belief that knowing about threats provides agency over them, such that more information feels like more safety; (2) gap-anxiety, the experience of any period without news as a dangerous gap in threat awareness, making the intervals between checking feel acutely threatening; and (3) news-as-civic-duty, the framing of continuous monitoring as responsible citizenship, which makes reduction feel irresponsible and self-indulgent.
Central to the analysis is the Information Paradox: more news consumption produces less sense of safety, because each piece of news generates new threat awareness that demands further monitoring; knowing more about danger cannot produce safety because safety was never the actual function of the information. We establish the formal monitoring-safety inversion: letting f(t) denote news-checking frequency, we show that accumulated displacement increases monotonically with f beyond a threshold f^*, while perceived safety S decreases.
Chronic news-monitoring is carefully distinguished from healthy news engagement, journalism as profession, political activism that requires news awareness, and from doomscrolling (social-media-feed consumption — a different architecture and trigger mechanism). Developmental roots are traced to environments with genuine unpredictable threats and family rituals where not-knowing was stigmatized.
Return paths to S^0 include scheduled news windows, news diet design, anxiety decoupling, and the practiced distinction between knowing and controlling. Nine propositions (P1–P9) are developed across ten sections.
