Chronic Nostalgic Fixation as Past-Refuge Wrong Attractor: The Past-Idealization Architecture, Present-as-Decline Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Temporal Orientation

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · past-refuge wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic nostalgic fixation is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CNF within the displacement framework, distinct from healthy nostalgia: here the person compulsively retreats to an idealized past as the primary orientation point; the present is experienced as chronic disappointment relative to a rewritten past; forward movement requires comparison against a fixed idealized standard that the present cannot meet.

The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated temporal orientation: the capacity to use the past as resource and context without organizing present experience around it; to move through time. Three mechanisms sustain the fixation basin: past idealization (memory is selectively edited to remove negative content from the target period; the idealized past is smoother and more meaningful than it was; the standard generated is impossible for any present experience to meet because it is fictional); present-as-decline narrative (the idealized past generates a baseline against which present experience is chronically measured and found lacking; the person experiences this as accurate perception rather than distortion); and return compulsion (the person repeatedly attempts to recreate past conditions in an attempt to return to the idealized state; each attempt fails because the idealized past is reconstructed, not preserved).

The Nostalgia Paradox states: chronic nostalgic fixation reliably prevents recovery of the genuine goods of the past it is organized to preserve; the goods of the past — connection, meaning, aliveness — are present-tense capacities requiring present engagement; they cannot be found by returning to past contexts. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in significant relational or contextual losses.

Return paths include present-tense meaning-making, grief work for genuine losses, and IFS work on the nostalgic part and the loss exile.
