PhronesisChronic one-upmanship (W_COU) is formalized within the displacement framework as a comparative-diminishment wrong attractor: a stable but dysfunctional relational basin in which a person compulsively responds to others' experiences, achievements, or stories by immediately producing a superior version of their own. The function is to re-center the self as the more significant figure in any exchange—the one who suffered more, accomplished more, or endured more.
The paradox that defines the pattern is this: the one-upper is attempting to connect through demonstrated equivalence or superiority, but the actual effect is to invalidate the other person's experience and make the conversation about the one-upper rather than the sharer, which produces social withdrawal over time. We identify three interlocking sustaining mechanisms. First, the competitive-connection model: the one-upper learned in a particular developmental environment that connection is achieved through shared status, so topping someone's story feels phenomenologically like joining them—a fundamentally mistaken model of how relational closeness is actually built.
Second, silence anxiety: the moment between hearing another person's story and responding is experienced as acutely dangerous, a space that must be filled quickly with one's own superior version before the connection window closes; the pause that would allow genuine receptivity is instead experienced as relational emergency. Third, the recognition-hunger loop: each successful top produces a brief sense of having been seen and matched, a momentary satiation of the drive for acknowledgment, but does not address the underlying fear that one's own experiences are not interesting or significant enough on their own—which means the hunger returns, and the cycle recommences.
The ground state S^0 is calibrated generous listening: the capacity to hold another person's experience as complete and significant without supplementing, surpassing, or competing with it, grounded in genuine curiosity about the other rather than in the management of one's own significance. A formal dynamical model is developed, nine propositions are stated and proved, and return paths from W_COU to S^0 are described.: one-upmanship, wrong attractor, comparative diminishment, recognition hunger, silence anxiety, displacement framework, competitive connection, generous listening, social comparison
