Distinguished from compulsive uniqueness-seeking (organized around distinction-by-opposition-to-mainstream), ordinary-terror is organized around the terror of ordinariness itself: the belief that an ordinary human life is a failed life, that to be interchangeable is to be non-existent, and that one must be special not merely to succeed but to justify having existed at all.
The paper formalizes ordinary-terror as a stable wrong attractor W_COT in the displacement framework, with healthy ground state S0 as calibrated self-regard — the capacity to find genuine meaning, connection, and satisfaction in an ordinary human life without requiring exceptionality as the precondition of worthy existence. Three primary mechanisms drive the attractor: ordinariness-as-nullity belief (the foundational interpretive premise that ordinary existence lacks value; the baseline human experience of being unremarkable among billions is processed as existential failure rather than as the common condition); specialness-narrative compulsion (the chronic construction, maintenance, and broadcasting of narratives about one's exceptional qualities, trajectory, or destiny; the narrative is never fully satisfying because specialness achieved is always vulnerable to being surpassed, normalized, or forgotten); and the comparison treadmill (chronic monitoring of one's relative position against others, in which any comparison that reveals ordinariness produces the terror, but no comparison that reveals distinction produces durable relief, because the standard continuously adjusts).
The central Significance Paradox states: the compulsive pursuit of exceptionality reliably produces the insignificance it is organized to prevent.
