PhronesisDisclosure is the primary mechanism through which relational intimacy develops. In its calibrated form the person shares personal material proportionate to the relational stage, the established level of mutual trust, and the reciprocal vulnerability of the other, building genuine closeness through a graduated, reciprocal exchange. Chronic over-sharing is formally reconceptualised here within the Displacement Framework as a wrong attractor W_ COS in the landscape of relational functioning, structurally distinct from the healthy ground state S^0_ CRD — Calibrated Relational Disclosure — which is the capacity to match disclosure depth to relational stage and to read and respond to reciprocal cues from the other.
The chronic over-sharer discloses at depth immediately and indiscriminately, intending to accelerate intimacy, but paradoxically violates relational pacing norms, overwhelms the listener, bypasses the reciprocity engine that generates genuine closeness, and systematically drives away the connection they are seeking. This is the central paradox the paper formalises: the mechanism designed to create closeness produces distance.
Three sustaining mechanisms are identified and formally characterised. First, disclosure-as-intimacy-shortcut: the belief, often derived from early experience, that depth of disclosure is itself the currency of closeness, rather than the graduated reciprocal process that produces it. Second, anxiety-through-concealment: the experience of holding personal material as emotionally destabilising, such that disclosure functions as anxiety regulation rather than relational investment, bypassing the question of whether the other is ready to receive it.
Third, connection-urgency-encoding: an underlying attachment-driven urgency that collapses relational time, making calibrated pacing feel like dangerous distance, and over-disclosure feel like the only safe speed. A formal model is developed in which disclosure depth D(t), relational reciprocity R(t), and intimacy I(t) are coupled dynamical variables. The model demonstrates that D(t) elevated without commensurate calibrated R(t) degrades I(t) rather than advancing it, because intimacy is a function of matched vulnerability, not raw disclosure volume.
Nine propositions formalise the mechanisms, the paradox structure, the dynamics of the reciprocity-bypass basin, and the return paths through pacing practice, reciprocity reading, and the development of a stable relational interior. The paper draws on social penetration theory, self-disclosure research, attachment theory, and reciprocity norms.
