Chronic Overpreparation as Insufficiency-Terror Wrong Attractor

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · insufficiency-terror wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic overpreparation is formalized as a wrong attractor W_COP within the displacement framework: the compulsive over-preparation for every contingency, distinct from compulsive future-scripting (which rehearses conversations) — this pattern concerns material and practical preparation organized around the terror of being caught insufficient. The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated preparation — the capacity to prepare proportionately to actual risk and genuine requirement; to tolerate the residual uncertainty that remains after reasonable preparation; to trust that unprepared-for situations can be navigated.

Three mechanisms sustain the overpreparation basin: insufficiency-catastrophizing (the imagined consequence of being caught unprepared is not mild inconvenience but catastrophic failure or public humiliation; this catastrophizing makes preparation feel genuinely necessary to survival rather than disproportionate; the preparation continues until anxiety falls below a variable threshold that cannot be reliably reached through preparation alone); preparation-as-control (preparing extensively is the only available method of influencing an uncertain future; the person cannot tolerate the passivity of having done enough and waiting; more preparation is the only action producing any sense of agency); and sufficiency-threshold underdetermination (there is no objective standard for sufficient preparation for most situations; the threshold is determined by anxiety level rather than external standard; when anxiety is high, more preparation is needed; the threshold moves).

The central Readiness Paradox states: chronic overpreparation reliably produces the unreadiness it is organized to prevent; the person who over-prepares exhausts resources, attention, and time on unlikely scenarios, leaving less capacity for genuine engagement with what actually occurs; they arrive ready for everything except the actual encounter, which always surprises because genuine encounter requires presence, not preparation.

Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor structure, with developmental roots in environments where being caught unprepared had serious consequences. Return paths include proportionality practice, graduated under-preparation experiments, IFS work on the preparer part, and distinguishing preparation from control.
