Chronic Past-Self Comparison as Temporal-Displacement Wrong Attractor: The Former-Glory Architecture, Self-Diminishment-by-Memory Basin, and the Return to Developmental Presence

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · temporal-displacement wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic past-self comparison — the compulsive measuring of one's current capacities, appearance, relationships, or vitality against an idealized memory of a former self — is here formally reconceptualized as a wrong attractor W_PSC in the landscape of developmental presence. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as developmental presence: the capacity to inhabit one's current self — with its particular capacities, limitations, and stage of development — without chronic diminishment through comparison to a past self that was younger, more capable, more beautiful, or in better circumstances.

W_PSC is rigorously distinguished from appropriate reflection on past experience, healthy nostalgia, and legitimate grief over real losses. Three interlocking mechanisms maintain the basin: past-idealization (memory systematically idealizes the past self and past circumstances — the former body, the former energy, the former options, the former beauty; this idealization is selective — the difficulties, limitations, and suffering of the past period are minimized while its advantages are amplified; the comparison baseline is distorted upward), present-diminishment (the current self is measured against the idealized past and found deficient; current capacities, appearance, circumstances, and relationships are experienced through the lens of what was lost rather than what is — a filter that systematically empties the present of its actual richness), and temporal inversion (psychological life becomes organized around a lost past rather than a present or future; the individual's primary residence is the former life; the current life is experienced as exile from it; this temporal inversion is self-reinforcing).

The Memory Paradox is central: chronic past-self comparison reliably produces the diminishment it is organized to honor — the act of comparing drains the present of vitality while the idealized past is inaccessible, producing maximum loss through the mechanism of comparison itself. Nine formal propositions characterize the developmental presence ground state, the temporal-displacement wrong attractor, the three maintenance mechanisms, the memory paradox, developmental roots in significant life transitions and cultures that valorize youth, and return paths through ACT present-moment acceptance, grief work for genuine losses, developmental framing, and mindfulness of present capacities.
