The capacity to tolerate the discomfort of that rupture and re-engage in the repair process — to return after conflict, to express hurt and need, to work through what happened — is the mechanism by which relationships deepen rather than merely endure.
This paper formalizes the chronic failure of that capacity as a wrong attractor W_ CPCW (chronic post-conflict withdrawal) within the displacement framework. The person living in W_ CPCW withdraws — physically, emotionally, or relationally — after any significant conflict, injury, or disappointment, and cannot re-engage with the repair process; each conflict becomes an exit point rather than a repair opportunity, and the relationship is steadily depleted rather than deepened.
We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated rupture-repair: the capacity to move through conflict, tolerate the discomfort of rupture, and return to the repair process that allows relationship to deepen. Three interlocking mechanisms sustain the wrong attractor: repair-as-vulnerability encoding, in which the re-engagement required for repair is experienced as more dangerous than the loss of the relationship; conflict-as-evidence processing, in which conflicts are read as proof that the relationship is fundamentally flawed rather than as ordinary ruptures in an otherwise good relationship; and the withdrawal-as-consequence belief, in which the person's withdrawal is experienced as a natural, proportionate response to injury rather than as an avoidant pattern that transcends any specific hurt.
Nine formal propositions articulate the attractor's structure and basin-maintenance dynamics. The paper introduces and proves the Repair Paradox: chronic post-conflict withdrawal reliably destroys the relationships it is organized to protect. Developmental roots lie in environments where repair was unavailable, where conflicts genuinely ended relationships, or where vulnerability in the repair process was exploited.
