We analyze this pattern using the displacement framework, modeling the provider's behavioral repertoire as a dynamical system whose state-space contains a wrong attractor W corresponding to the compulsive-soothe mode.
Within this framework, ground state S^0 denotes the provider's unencumbered capacity for calibrated, boundaried support—present, honest, and appropriately limited. The displacement field D() measures departure from S^0, and cumulative displacement = D()\,dt tracks the entrenchment of chronic reassurance-giving over time. We identify the soothing architecture—the mechanistic sequence of anxiety-detection, soothe-deployment, and dependency reinforcement—that sustains W against perturbation.
We characterize the authentic-engagement foreclosure basin: the region of state-space from which genuine relational contact becomes inaccessible while the attractor holds. Nine formal propositions organize the core claims. We conclude with exit dynamics and therapeutic implications, situating the analysis within the literature on codependency, enmeshment, anxious attachment, and therapeutic distance.
