Chronic Regret Cycling as Counterfactual-Life Wrong Attractor: The Parallel-Path Architecture, Unlived-Life Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Present Agency

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic regret cycling (CRC) is here distinguished from both ordinary regret—a transient adaptive signal—and from the counterfactual-rumination wrong attractor documented in earlier work in this series. Where ordinary regret closes, and where the counterfactual-rumination attractor is organised around isolated branch-point revisitation, CRC involves the sustained maintenance of an entire parallel life: a coherent, elaborated, vivid alternative existence anchored to specific past decision points—career pivots, relationship choices, geographic moves, paths not taken—which the person inhabits repeatedly and in increasing detail.

The wrong attractor W_ CRC is not merely a loop of negative comparison but a stable cognitive dwelling: the person lives, functionally, in two lives simultaneously, and neither is fully inhabited. The ground state S^0 to which the system is called to return is calibrated present agency: a relationship with past choices that acknowledges their genuine costs while restoring orientation toward present possibilities rather than counterfactual alternatives.

Three sustaining mechanisms are formalised. The first is parallel-path idealisation: the counterfactual life is systematically overestimated because it carries none of its own consequences, friction, or new problems—only the conspicuous absence of the current life's difficulties. The second is present-as-contingent encoding: the implicit architecture in which the current life is experienced as not fully real or fully owned, because the alternative choice was also available and was very nearly made.

The third is regret-as-correction fantasy: the cycling is partly driven by the implicit belief that returning to the branch point with sufficient intensity will somehow permit revision. Nine propositions formalise the parallel-path architecture, the unlived-life basin dynamics, the three sustaining mechanisms, the Regret Paradox (inhabiting the counterfactual life prevents full inhabitation of the actual life, generating the hollowness that makes the counterfactual appear more attractive), and the return paths through de-idealisation, present-ownership, and calibrated acknowledgement of genuine loss.

The paper draws on Gilovich and Medvec's temporal asymmetry of regret, Kahneman and Tversky's counterfactual thinking, Roese's functional analysis, Bonanno's resilience research, Frankl's meaning-making, McAdams's narrative identity, Wilson and Gilbert's affective forecasting, and Nolen-Hoeksema's ruminative response style.
