Chronic Relational Loyalty-Testing as Abandonment-Verification Wrong Attractor: The Provocation-Proof Architecture, Loyalty-Demand Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Trust

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

The capacity for calibrated trust — the ability to extend confidence in relationships on the basis of accumulated evidence rather than demanding extraordinary proof — constitutes one of the foundational competencies of relational health. This paper formalizes the chronic absence of that capacity as a wrong attractor W_ CRLT within the displacement framework. The person living in W_ CRLT compulsively tests whether relationships are real, stable, and loyal by provoking conflict, withdrawing strategically, demanding demonstrations of commitment, or engineering crises that require the other person to prove their dedication under pressure.

This is not appropriate relationship monitoring, reasonable reassurance-seeking, or proportionate response to genuine relational threat. It is a structural compulsion in which the absence of a successfully passed test constitutes evidence of disloyalty, while ordinary daily reliability does not count as evidence at all. We designate the healthy ground state S^0 as calibrated trust: evidence-based confidence in relationships built through the accumulated weight of small, consistent experiences of reliability, with tolerance for normal relationship fluctuation — tiredness, distance, differing needs — without catastrophizing.

Three interlocking mechanisms sustain the wrong attractor: (1) unconditional love as theoretical requirement — the implicit belief that genuine love or friendship must survive any test, any provocation, any withdrawal, so that only extreme demonstrations constitute proof; (2) normal relational fluctuation as abandonment signal — the systematic misreading of the other person's natural needs, moods, or moments of distance as early markers of departure; and (3) proof-through-test compulsion — the belief that only a successfully passed test constitutes legitimate evidence of loyalty, while the everyday fabric of reliable presence does not count.

Nine formal propositions articulate the structure of the attractor and its basin-maintenance dynamics. The paper introduces and proves the Loyalty-Testing Paradox: tests designed to verify a relationship's stability systematically destabilize it. The more loyalty tests are applied, the more the other person's natural responses to being tested — frustration, boundary-setting, withdrawal — are misread as confirming the feared abandonment, deepening the conviction that further tests are necessary.

The attractor is self-sealing. Developmental roots lie in anxious and disorganized attachment, early experiences of conditional love, and the learned conclusion that ordinary presence is insufficient evidence of anyone's commitment. Return paths include evidence reweighting, attachment security development through relational experience, and Emotionally Focused Therapy targeting the underlying abandonment schema.
