Chronic Relationship-Testing as Attachment-Security Wrong Attractor: The Conditional-Attachment Architecture, Test-Escalation Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Attachment Security

Rincón, D. · 2026 · Zenodo · attachment-security wrong attractor

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic relationship-testing is formalized as a wrong attractor W_CRT within the displacement framework: the compulsive testing of relationship stability through provocative, demanding, or withdrawal-inducing behavior — not to damage the relationship but to confirm that it will hold; each passed test provides brief security relief before the anxiety returns and a larger test is required.

The healthy ground state S0 is calibrated attachment security: the capacity to hold confidence in relationships without requiring continuous testing, to tolerate the ordinary uncertainty of connection, and to ask directly for reassurance when needed. Three mechanisms sustain the testing basin: conditional-attachment belief (the relationship's stability is experienced as conditional and cannot be taken for granted; the only available resolution for mounting anxiety is a test that forces the other person to demonstrate commitment; direct request for reassurance is unavailable because it would expose need); test-escalation compulsion (each passed test provides brief relief before the anxiety baseline reasserts; the next test must be more demanding to produce equivalent relief; over time tests escalate in severity); and passed-test devaluation (when the other person passes the test, the result is devalued — they stayed because they didn't understand, because they are naive, or because the stakes weren't high enough; the passed test therefore never fully satisfies).

The Testing Paradox states: chronic relationship-testing reliably damages the security it is organized to confirm; the escalating tests exhaust the tested partner, communicates distrust, and produces the very withdrawal that the tests were organized to prevent. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor, with developmental roots in insecure attachment, particularly anxious-preoccupied attachment with unpredictable caregiver availability.

Return paths include direct security-seeking, test-impulse recognition, and IFS work on the tester and attachment exile.
