This paper analyzes chronic risk-aversion as a wrong attractor within the displacement dynamics framework: a basin with genuine local stability, real local benefits, and a systematic architecture that deepens over time through threat-detection hyperactivation and progressive narrowing of the domain considered safe.
We introduce the ground state S^0 as calibrated courageous engagement — appropriate risk-taking proportional to potential value, capable of distinguishing genuine danger from perceived threat, and accepting the irreducible uncertainty that inheres in all meaningful action. The displacement cost function D() measures distance from S^0, while the accumulated displacement = D()\,dt captures the chronic pattern.
We formalize the wrong attractor's architecture through nine propositions covering threat-detection hyperactivation, basin depth as a function of threat sensitivity, the opportunity-blindness mechanism, the displacement costs of foregone engagement, and the conditions for return. The return path involves risk-graduated exposure, the capacity to distinguish calculated risk from recklessness, reframing uncertainty as possibility, and systematic tracking of foregone opportunity costs.
We argue that chronic risk-aversion produces its own category of harm — stunted growth, constrained connection, foreclosed meaning — that is invisible from within the basin because opportunity costs are never directly experienced.
