PhronesisChronic sarcasm is one of the most socially legible and structurally stable displacement patterns available to adults in complex relational environments. It offers the speaker simultaneous access to wit, social approval, emotional protection, and plausible deniability regarding their sincere affective states. Within the displacement framework introduced in prior Phronesis Issues, we characterize chronic sarcasm as a wrong attractor W—a basin in behavioral-affective state space that is dynamically stable, energetically efficient, and deeply incompatible with the sincere expression required for genuine intimacy and self-knowledge.
We define the irony architecture as the mechanistic scaffold sustaining this attractor: the four-stage loop of vulnerability detection, ironic inversion, deniability preservation, and sincerity foreclosure. We formalize the sincere-expression foreclosure basin B_W and analyze its geometry. Nine propositions characterize the attractor's formation, maintenance, and the conditions necessary for exit.
We conclude with an account of return dynamics: the trajectory from chronic ironic detachment toward calibrated direct speech, the incremental exposure protocols that make this traversal survivable, and the role of the ground state S^0 as the orientation point anchoring the return. This paper is addressed to those for whom sarcasm has become not a tool but a home.
