We distinguish calibrated self-regard—the ground state S^0 in which self-assessment tracks actual competence, contribution, and relational standing—from esteem inflation, which we define as the systematic upward distortion of self-representation driven by the concealment of felt inadequacy.
Chronic self-aggrandizement emerges not from genuine excess of confidence but from a compensatory architecture in which the grandiose performance must be sustained continuously to prevent collapse into the underlying insufficiency experience. We identify the inflation loop as the core basin-deepening dynamic: each instance of self-promotion raises the implicit standard against which the self is subsequently measured, requiring escalating performance to maintain equilibrium.
The paper further examines how the grandiosity architecture systematically forecloses authentic presence, transforming potential relationships into audiences and potential intimacy into threat. Nine formal propositions characterize the attractor geometry, distinguish W_CSA from healthy confidence and domain-specific pride, and map return paths through grounding in actual achievement, tolerance of ordinary standing, and the cultivation of the authentic-presence basin.
We situate the framework within existing literature on narcissistic personality organization, fragile high self-esteem, status anxiety, and social media self-presentation dynamics, proposing that calibrated self-regard represents the only dynamically stable resolution.
