Chronic Self-Consciousness as Meta-Awareness Wrong Attractor: The Constant-Observation Architecture, Appearance-Monitoring Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Self-Awareness

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic self-consciousness is formalized as a wrong attractor W_ CSC within the displacement framework: a stable basin in psychological state space characterized by persistent meta-awareness of the self as an object in others' perceptual field. The person inhabiting this attractor experiences themselves simultaneously from inside and outside, never fully absorbed in activity or relationship because the self-monitor never disengages.

Three interlocking sustaining mechanisms are identified: (1) constant-observation belief — the implicit conviction that one is continuously observed and evaluated, producing a chronic imagined audience not tied to actual social context; (2) appearance-monitoring compulsion — continuous monitoring of one's own appearance, expression, movement, and speech from an external vantage point, splitting the experiential self from the observing self in a manner that degrades the very performance it targets; and (3) spontaneity-as-danger encoding — the learning that moments of full absorption are dangerous because they reduce self-monitoring capacity, securing the monitor's activation even in contexts where it is clearly counterproductive.

The Self-Consciousness Paradox is identified and formalized: chronic self-consciousness reliably produces the social awkwardness it is organized to prevent, because the split attention between experience and self-observation is itself perceptible to others and degrades the quality of performance. The healthy ground state S^0 is defined as calibrated self-awareness: the capacity to access appropriate self-awareness when it is useful while being fully absorbed in activity, relationship, and experience when it is not.

Nine formal propositions with proofs characterize the attractor architecture, distinguish it from shyness, social anxiety, and appropriate social awareness, trace its developmental roots in environments where observation was dangerous or performance was chronically evaluated, and specify return paths including absorption practice, monitor-disengagement experiments, and Internal Family Systems work on the self-monitor and the spontaneity exile.
