PhronesisChronic self-monitoring names the condition in which a person's ongoing meta-awareness of their own self-presentation eclipses the capacity for unreflective, spontaneous engagement with the world. Within the Displacement Framework, we identify this condition as a wrong attractor W_SM: a stable basin in cognitive–behavioral state space from which the natural ground state S^0 — characterized by unselfconscious, calibrated natural presence — is difficult to recover.
The surveillance architecture that constitutes W_SM involves four interlocking loops: trigger detection, self-evaluation, adjustment execution, and outcome review. Together these loops impose a dual-layer consciousness in which the self is simultaneously actor and audience, performer and critic. Spontaneous expression is foreclosed not by any single act of self-censorship but by the structural impossibility of unreviewed action within the basin.
We present nine formal propositions (P1–P9) characterizing attractor capture, spontaneity suppression, performance ossification, intimacy foreclosure, fatigue accumulation, social signal misreading, observer detachment, basin deepening, and the return condition. We then describe the geometry of the spontaneous-expression foreclosure basin and outline a path of return via observer quieting, somatic grounding, and graduated unselfconsciousness.
The framework is related to Snyder's self-monitoring construct, Goffman's dramaturgical self, social anxiety, imposter syndrome, and autism masking.
