Chronic Self-Referencing as Conversational-Recentering Wrong Attractor: The Everything-Through-My-Experience Architecture, Attentional-Gravity Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Genuine Curiosity

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic self-referencing (W_CSR) is formalized within the displacement framework as a conversational-recentering wrong attractor: a stable but dysfunctional relational basin in which a person compulsively processes external content—other people's experiences, feelings, disclosures, and narratives—by routing it through the lens of their own analogous experience. The chronic self-referencer is not primarily competitive (that is one-upmanship, Paper \#719) nor primarily inward-oriented independent of conversation (that is navel-gazing, Paper \#724); their pattern is specifically relational and specifically reflexive—every incoming external experience triggers an immediate and largely automatic search for the personal analog, and the analog, once found, becomes the content of the response.

The other person's Japan becomes their Japan. The other person's difficulty becomes their difficulty. The other person's grief becomes the frame in which their own grief is invited to sit. The structural consequence is that surface conversation feels connected—personal experience is being exchanged, intimacy signaled, stories shared—while the other person is never genuinely heard as the subject of their own experience.

They are consistently received as prompts. Their narratives function as inputs to the self-referencing engine and are returned as outputs: the self-referencer's version, the self-referencer's parallel, the self-referencer's frame. We identify three sustaining mechanisms. First, the resonance-as-connection model: the self-referencer believes that finding and offering the personal analog is the act of connection—that “I know what you mean, this happened to me too” is the syntax of intimacy—and does not register that the other person experiences their story as having been used as a prompt rather than received as the thing it is.

Second, attention regulation through familiar terrain: unfamiliar content or unanchored attention produces a low-level anxiety that is relieved when the personal analog is found—the self-referencer's own experience is navigable ground, and the move to it is experienced as settling rather than fleeing. Third, self-as-default processing frame: the routing of external content through personal analogy is not deliberate and is not felt as competitive or self-centered—it is the cognitive architecture through which the world is processed, making the pattern structurally invisible to the person doing it.

The ground state S^0 is calibrated genuine curiosity: the capacity to hold another person's experience as interesting and complete in itself, without the need to run it through the self-analogizing filter, and to ask from that position what it was like for them. A formal dynamical model is developed, nine propositions are stated and proved, and return paths from W_CSR to S^0 are described.: chronic self-referencing, wrong attractor, self-as-default processing, resonance-as-connection, attentional gravity, displacement framework, genuine curiosity, self-reference effect, conversational recentering
