Chronic Topic-Avoidance as Discomfort-Minimization Wrong Attractor: The Forbidden-Subject Architecture, Open-Dialogue Foreclosure Basin, and the Return to Calibrated Courageous Conversation

This is the record, not the paper. The work itself is the deposit on Zenodo, under the DOI below. What follows is its abstract, as deposited.

Chronic topic-avoidance is examined as a discomfort-minimization wrong attractor in the dynamical systems vocabulary of the displacement framework. We define the ground state S^0 as calibrated courageous conversation—a regime in which relevant subjects are engaged with proportional directness and genuine epistemic openness. Displacement D() measures the cost incurred at each moment a relevant topic is circumnavigated rather than addressed, and the accumulated displacement = D()\,dt quantifies the total structural damage inflicted by sustained avoidance on a relationship, institution, or deliberative system.

The wrong attractor W is characterized by its forbidden-subject architecture: a learned, self-reinforcing topology of conversational foreclosure in which certain subjects become systematically unreachable. We identify the foreclosure basin as the region of state space from which unassisted return to S^0 is dynamically unlikely, analyze the phase-transition conditions that push a system across the basin boundary, and develop nine propositions governing the mechanics of avoidance, its compounding costs, and the intervention geometry required for recovery.

We close by examining systemic effects when chronic avoidance propagates from dyadic to institutional scales, and by characterizing the signal that marks genuine return: not the mere performance of difficult speech but the restoration of calibrated, courageous, and mutually legible contact with contested ground.
