Within the displacement framework, a ground state S^0 represents calibrated emotional resonance: the capacity to generate responses proportionate to the valence and magnitude of events encountered.
Displacement D() captures the cost of departing from S^0 along a suppression coordinate, and the accumulated suppression = _0^T D((t))\, dt measures the total energetic and relational burden of sustained affect inhibition. Chronic underreacting—the wrong attractor W—is characterized by a deep basin in this landscape whose walls constitute what we term the proportionate-response foreclosure horizon.
We formalize basin depth, identify phase transitions governing entry and exit, describe the internal architecture of the flatness state, and derive conditions under which return to S^0 is tractable. We address systemic and relational effects, showing that flatness propagates into the field of the person's interlocutors, creating secondary displacement pressures.
